Zilu

One of the reasons we all love to buy handmade it because we like to know the people we are buying from. We like to know their stories and to feel like we are buying something that is made with love.  There is a new online store, Zilu, that does a nice job of giving a voice to the designers and makers behind the products.  Any time you click on a product, you can find the name and bio of the person who created it.  I love that!

When I was a little girl, we had a little viking man in our living room, a remnant of the time my parents spent in Iceland when my dad was stationed there.  I remember being so intrigued by that little man, but he wasn't a toy as his sword was a bit sharp.  It's no wonder then that I love the playful and imaginative world created by Sandra Monat, found at Zilu.

Keepsake Pillow

Favorite tee-shirts are always hard to get rid of, and often we end up saving them in the backs of drawers.  The shirt below was my daughter's and she wore it until it was too small to fit over her head anymore, but I could never get rid of it.  I found it recently when I was going through some things and decided to make it into a keepsake pillow that she could still enjoy.

It's really quite simple to make a tee-shirt into a pillow:

- First, find one.

- Then, cut the shirt into two squares.  When you're finished you should have a front and back for your pillow.

- Next, put the right sides together and pin the pieces.  You will then either hand-stitch or machine-stitch around the edges of the pillow, leaving a small opening on one side.  (this will be the trickiest bit, as it can try your patience a little to sew stretchy tee-shirt material; take your time and it should be OK)

- Turn the pillow right side out, and stuff it with polyfill or cotton.

- Finally, use a simple stitch to close the pillow

My favorite part was leaving the pillow on my daughter's bed and hearing squeals of delight when she saw it.  If you can't sew, you can probably find someone who can!
